Disclosure: Fiverr is a FreelanceMile partner, and that partnership affects where it appears in this guide. Some links are affiliate links, so I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The pros, cons and fees for every platform, including Fiverr, are my honest take.
Yes, teens can freelance, but most big platforms are 18+. On Fiverr, 13 to 17 year olds can sell only through a parent-owned account, and Upwork requires you to be 18.
Below are the platform age rules, freelance jobs teens can actually do, what your parents need to handle, and how to land your first client. If you have questions, ask in the comments below.
Key takeaways
- Age rules: Fiverr allows 13 to 17 year olds only through a parent or guardian’s account. Upwork is 18+.
- Freelancer.com: 16 and 17 year olds can use an adult’s account with permission, subject to local law.
- Best first jobs: writing, social media help, design, video editing, tutoring and tech help.
- Parents matter: they own the account, handle ID checks and usually receive the payments.
- Taxes: in the U.S., self-employment tax applies once net earnings reach $400 a year.

Can teens do freelance jobs?
Yes. Freelancing means selling a skill to clients on your own schedule, and age doesn’t stop you from having a useful skill.
What age changes is where you can sell and who signs up. Most marketplaces need an adult to own the account.
Which freelance platforms allow teens?
Only a few, and always through an adult. I checked each platform’s own rules on 1 November 2026.

| Platform | Minimum age to own an account | Option for under 18 |
|---|---|---|
| Fiverr | 18 | 13 to 17 can sell only through a parent or guardian-owned account, with permission (Fiverr) |
| Freelancer.com | Able to form legally binding contracts; under 16 not allowed | Over 15 and under 18 can use an adult’s account with the account holder’s permission, subject to local laws |
| Upwork | 18, or the age of majority in your country if older | None |
| PayPal (U.S.) | 18, or the age of majority in your state | Payments usually go to a parent’s account |
Fiverr for teens: the parent-owned account
Fiverr’s minor guide says the parent or guardian owns and manages the account and completes ID verification (Fiverr). Your profile picture can’t show a child.
Your profile and Gig must also say: “The service is provided by a minor under an account owned by the parents of {minor’s name} and managed by them.”
Under-18 sellers can’t offer dance lessons, modeling, greeting cards and videos, or “your message on” Gigs (Fiverr Community Standards). Learn the basics in what Fiverr is.
Freelancer.com and Upwork
Freelancer.com’s terms say you can’t use the site if you’re under 16 (Freelancer.com). The adult whose account you use is responsible for everything on it.
Upwork is simpler: you must be 18, or the age of majority in your country if that’s older (Upwork). Teens will need to wait or work with local clients.
What freelance jobs can teens do?
Pick a skill you already use at school or for fun. These jobs need a phone or laptop, free tools and practice, not a degree.
1. Writing and proofreading
Write blog posts, product descriptions or proofread for small businesses. Build three sample pieces first, then follow how to start freelance writing with no experience.
2. Social media help
Local cafes, salons and shops often need someone to post, write captions or film short clips. Show them a few posts you’ve made for a club or family business.
3. Graphic design
Design flyers, thumbnails, logos or event posters with free design tools. A small portfolio of five designs is enough to start pitching.
4. Video editing
YouTubers and small brands need short-form edits. Edit a few sample clips from your own footage so clients can see your style.
5. Tutoring younger students
Help younger kids with homework, reading or a subject you’re strong in. Start with families you know, since the online marketplaces above need an adult account owner.
6. Tech help and simple websites
Set up phones, printers, Wi-Fi or a basic website for neighbors and small businesses. If you can code, build one demo site to show.
7. Photography
Shoot product photos for local sellers or pictures at small family events. Ask a parent to come along to anything held away from home.
8. Voice-over and music
Fiverr allows child voice-over, but only when a parent or guardian owns the account and says so in the Gig and profile (Fiverr). Beat-making and audio cleanup work the same way.
9. Translation
Bilingual? Translate menus, flyers or short documents for local businesses. Stick to simple, non-legal text until you build experience.
10. Virtual assistant tasks
Data entry, research, spreadsheet cleanup and email sorting suit organized teens. A family business or a parent’s colleague is an easy first client.

Do teens need parent permission to freelance?
Yes, in practice. On Fiverr and Freelancer.com an adult must own the account, and in the U.S. PayPal requires account holders to be 18 or the age of majority in their state.
Fiverr also says parents and freelancers who work with minors must follow local child labor laws (Fiverr). If a business hires you as an employee instead, U.S. youth labor rules vary by age and task (U.S. Department of Labor).
- Your parent handles: account ownership, ID checks, payments and contracts.
- You handle: the work, deadlines and messages, with a parent able to see them.
- Never share: your home address, school or personal social accounts with clients.
Do teens pay tax on freelance income?
In the U.S., yes, once it adds up. The IRS says you owe self-employment tax if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more (IRS).
The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, which covers Social Security and Medicare (IRS). Keep a simple record of every payment and ask a parent to help you file.
How do you get your first freelance client as a teen?
Start close to home, then move online with a parent’s help.
- Pick one skill. Choose the job above you could do this week.
- Make three samples. Clients care about proof, not your age.
- Ask people you know. Family, neighbors, teachers and local shops are your easiest first clients.
- Ask for a review. A short written testimonial helps you win the next client.
- Go online with a parent. Set up a parent-owned Fiverr account that follows the minor rules.
When I hire freelancers on Upwork, ratings, recent reviews and past work drive about 80% of my decision. That’s why samples and reviews matter more than anything else when you start.

Freelancing vs side hustles for teens
Freelancing is selling a skill to a client. If you’d rather babysit, pet-sit, sell crafts or take surveys, see my list of side hustles for teens.
